When it comes to leadership of the church, there is one True Chief Shepherd - Jesus Christ. He is the head of the body, the lead pastor of and over the church. (1 Peter 5:4, Colossians 1:18, 1 Corinthians 12:12-31). His Word is our authority, our guide, our light. We submit to Him and His Word in all things.
According to His Word, the local churches on earth are to be led by elders who have been called and entrusted by the Holy Spirit (Acts 20:28, 1 Peter 5:2, Titus 1:5-9). Ultimately, God will hold the elders of each church accountable for how they led His church (Hebrews 13:17). The role of elder is not to be taken lightly, but is a role of servant leadership, following the true elder, Jesus.
The role of the elder is to:
Know the church.
Protect the church.
Feed the church.
Care for the church.
Lead the church.
